The Dark One

I remember a nightmare I had long ago, it began with a man. He sits in the corner, his eyes fixed against the reflected image of himself in the dimly lit room. His own gaze burns deep into his very soul. His blood soaked hands rest on his now crimson pants. He didn’t want this, he never wanted this. The tool of his sin, a blood stained blade lay beside him. He screams, and in a flurry of blood and broken glass, his own reflection vanished. He feels nothing as he stares down at his bloody fists; shards of glass protrude from every inch of his hands, like trees covering two great scarlet mountains. He surveys the blood-covered room; he no longer knew which blood was his and which was hers.

Slowly he begins to pull each bloodstained shard from his shaking hands, He yanks hard to set free the glass wedged deep into his bones. His mind crumbles, and he runs a small shard across his arm, He feels nothing. Slowly and softly he licks the blood from his fingertips? It tastes so sweet, sweet as the rarest of wines.

He walks over and kneels next to her body. He wipes away the blood and lightly kisses her cheek. He takes her hand in his; it is so soft, and yet so cold. A tear falls from his eye. WHY! Why did it have to happen like this? He never thought she would be one of ‘them’. He could hear them outside, moving around. That sound, OH! That torturous sound. He had thought he was safe, then… It happened, “SLAM!” the door pounded as it was beaten from the other side. No! How did they find him? It must have been when he screamed, or was it… THE BLOOD! He scrambled for his blade.

The door began to crack! “Slam!” He forced himself into the corner. “SLAM!” Waiting, waiting for the door to be destroyed. “SLAM!” The door was almost finished, he could see them now. “I won’t let you be the one’s to take me!!!” He raised the blade high into the air…”SLAM!” The door was now in splinters. They flooded in! He brought the blade thundering down!…And that was all, I awoke in a pool of sweat and tears. Forsaken, never to know the outcome of this strange man’s battle, never to know the identity of “Them”…Never to know the truth.
